Zentangle
The focus of my artwork is a sea creature, a shark to be precise, it is depicted swimming across the first and second window of my zentangle. The title of my work is "Blue Abyss" and one of the most apparent element usage is that of the lines in the back. The variety of straight lines next to ones that curve is utilized to represent the ocean and its movement. To a degree, these same lines can be said to be the most obvious principle of art. They give the art a sense of movement, rhythm that bounces from one sea creature to the other.
The zentangle was created on a sheet of paper, brought to life with the use of both fine point and thick permanent markers. Since it was made in such a way, a great amount of thought was put into the incorporation of both art elements and art principles so that the final product would be a very clear representation of what my mind wanted to convey. Elements that were placed into thought and are very apparent in the art include lines, shapes, and value. Principles, on the other hand, consist mainly of pattern and rhythm. What inspired me to create such a piece was the lengthy ponder of what animal exactly I was going to make my focus. When I concluded that it would be a shark, I began to really become amazed and almost felt a sense of awe or enlightenment. This was because the shark, although a large and fierce creature, seemed only minute when placed in the vast ocean. Perhaps subconsciously, I was expressing the sense of solitude I have dealt with in several parts of my life. This would explain why the resulting shark was smaller than the one I had initially planned to draw. When commencing the zentangle, it was clearly the completion of the assignment which provided motivation. As I progressed, however, there was clearly a shift in source of motivation. I was truly inspired by this idea of the shark and its minuscule size in comparison to the ocean as well as what it represented to me personally that the ultimate goals was to end with a piece of art that represented courage and ferocity if needed while living alone. I was quite satisfied with my work as I felt that it depicted the loneliness of the shark to an obvious extent. In creating this artwork, my beliefs that a story could be told in a still picture was reinforced. Roughly, it was what I imagined and felt efficient in transferring the picture in my head onto the paper. This assignment will be very influential in future artworks because I know feel confident in expressing myself and will not shy away from exploring new techniques or styles in order to tell a story utilizing elements and principles of art. |
